Shipment consolidation and tracking are time-savers
With the variety of services and the size of the inventory, Alibris for Libraries is our number one vendor for out-of-print, foreign-language, and rare materials.
We prefer features that Alibris for Libraries has, compared to many other online retailers. The rating system gives us confidence in the sellers. The fact that Alibris receives materials from the sellers, checks their condition, and consolidates shipments is a big time-saver for us. The ability to track shipments and use a purchase order instead of a credit card eliminates numerous headaches and creates real value for the acquisitions department.
As a research institution we get a lot of requests for out-of-print and hard-to-find titles, often for items with few copies in existence like museum exhibition catalogs. Also, our special collections' acquisitions often are rare finds, especially in the conditions we demand. We prefer to not backorder items. Depending on the publication dates, if other vendors we use don't have an item, we don't order from them. Instead, we go directly to Alibris for Libraries. The database is so big we get very few false matches.
Our subject librarians are currently working on doing many replacements. We search Alibris and find the edition, translation or foreign language titles we need. Using the multiple ISBN search is a big help with our replacement project and we like that our search results are sorted by quality and price. The Alibris for Libraries website gives more consistent information about available copies and sellers than any other online book site.
