Ordering Help

Placing an order

Ordering with Alibris is fast and secure. Just follow these simple steps:

  1. To find the items you want, search from the Alibris for Libraries homepage. Each time you find an item you want to purchase, click the Add to Cart button above the price. (Items that are available to ship within two or three weeks are sourced from our independent seller network and are subject to prior sale.)
  2. After you have added the last item to your Shopping Cart, click the Checkout button on the Shopping Cart page. (You can access your Shopping Cart by clicking the Cart link in the upper-right corner of any page.)
  3. If you're a returning customer, enter your e-mail address and password in the Registered users box, and then click the Sign in button. (If you've forgotten your password, click the Forgot Your Password? link. You will be asked for the e-mail address on your account so that we may send you your password.)

    If this is your first order with us, enter your e-mail address and a password in the appropriate fields of the Create an account box. Click the Continue button.
  4. Fill in your shipping address and click Continue. This is where you want us to send your order and doesn't have to be the same as the billing address.
  5. Select your payment method. If you choose the credit card option, enter your credit card information in the fields provided, making sure to enter your card number as one complete string (with no spaces or punctuation). If you choose the purchase order option, fill in the purchase order number and/or individual reference numbers. Make sure you selected the correct payment method.
  6. Enter your billing address in the fields provided. This is the name and address associated with the credit card or purchase order you are using to order and should match the information on your credit card billing statement or purchase order. Click continue.
  7. On the Review & Place Order page, verify the details of your order. Choose your preferred shipment method if you are outside the continental U.S. All shipments within the continental U.S. are shipped via UPS. (See Shipping Help for more details.)
  8. If you've received a coupon code from us, enter it in the field provided. (Enter it as one complete string, without spaces before or after the code.) Click the Apply button. Confirm the application of the coupon via your Order Summary in the top-right box.
  9. Verify your order information. If you need to make changes, click the corresponding Change button for updating shipping or payment information.
  10. If you require a printout, click the Printer-Friendly Version link in the top-right corner and then print a copy of your order. Click the Back button to return to the Review & Place Order page.
  11. If all the details of your order are correct and you are ready to finalize your order, click the Place Your Order button (in the Order Summary box or at the bottom of the page).
  12. You're done! Please do not close or refresh your browser until you receive a confirmation page showing your order number. You'll receive e-mail confirmation that your order was placed within about an hour.

Multiple copies

Each used item you find on our Web site is a single, unique copy. If you want more than one copy of a particular item, scroll through the search results for additional available copies. To get the specific copies you want, add each item to your Shopping Cart and then place your order when you have finished making your selections.

To buy more than one copy of a new book (see below), add the new title to your Shopping Cart, enter the quantity in the quantity box, and click Update. If no quantity box appears beside the title, you must select individual copies.

New books

In addition to millions of used and hard-to-find books, we also carry new books! All new books are designated by the following graphic:

You'll notice that different copies of the same item may be priced differently on our Web site. This is because independent sellers are free to offer used titles at prices they determine. Each used item is a single, unique copy with a specific condition, features, and other factors—all of which help determine the price.

If you receive a cancellation email from us, we may have other copies of your item listed, so please check the website for other copies. Or you may want to try our substitution program.

If we do not have another suitable copy, you are welcome to submit a request to Book Fetch and we'll keep looking for your selection. Every time an item gets added to our inventory, Book Fetch will check to see if it matches your request. If Book Fetch finds a match, you will be notified immediately via e-mail. Please be sure to review Book Fetch's Tips & Tricks. At this time Book Fetch cannot search for music and movie items.

If you placed your order on the Alibris for Libraries site, you can cancel an order if it hasn’t already shipped. To cancel an order, please send your request as soon as possible via email to [email protected]. Be sure to include the Alibris order number. 

Substitutions for canceled orders

If you ever receive the disappointing "sorry, we no longer have that particular book for sale" e-mail notification from Alibris for Libraries suggesting that you may reorder another copy if you're still interested, you can now simply forward that notification back to us at [email protected]. We will re-search our database for a similar copy of the canceled title (same binding, same condition, same edition) and reorder a new copy on your behalf. We'll even adjust the freight charges (if any) and assign your same purchase order number to match your original order.

Please note that though we will strive to substitute a copy of the book with the exact same price as originally ordered, we will substitute a lower-priced copy if available, and we may substitute a higher-priced copy up to 10% above your original order amount. We will let you know if we are not able to find a substitute copy of the original order. Otherwise, you will simply receive a new Order Acknowledgement e-mail.


Items designated as "Ready to Ship" are on hand in our warehouse and will likely ship one business day after you place your order, unless your order is being consolidated (see next paragraph).

Items that are available to ship within two or three weeks are located in our seller network. When you order them, we retrieve them, whether they're in a tiny Alaska shop or in a warehouse in France. These books are then shipped to our warehouse, where they are consolidated with other books in your order.

Payment methods

Credit cards

We gladly accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, JCB, and Discover cards. You may also use an ATM or other debit card bearing the Visa or MasterCard logo. We debit your credit card for the full amount of the order at the time your order is placed. Should we become unable to ship any ordered item, we will credit the amount of the item (plus shipping and handling charges) back to your card. If ordering by credit card, please be sure to click the credit card option.

Purchase orders

You may order online via a library purchase order. Select the Purchase Order payment option during checkout and enter your order-level P.O. number. Or you may enter individual order numbers in the Your Ref # field beside each line item in your Shopping Cart.

Purchase order numbers and reference numbers will be cited on all paperwork. Your invoice will be mailed when the order ships. Once you receive your invoice, you may remit payment by check, money order, or, if you are an international customer, by wire transfer. Our payment terms are net 30 days.

Credit card safety

Alibris is safe, guaranteed. To ensure that your information is safely guarded, we use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption. SSL encrypts all personal information, including your credit card number, name, and address. With this encryption, only Alibris can decode your information. Coupon codes

If you've received a coupon from us, enter it in the field provided during checkout. Make sure to enter it as one complete string (without spaces before or after the code), and then click the Apply button. You can confirm the application of the coupon via your Order Summary in the top-right box on the Review & Place Order page during checkout.

Sales tax

Alibris charges sales tax on library orders shipping to many states, as well as Australia. If your organization is exempt from paying sales tax, please e-mail a copy of your organization's exemption certificate to: [email protected].
